When we first showed up, it was just a TV on a bare wall. We gave it a limestone backdrop with a fireplace beneath — and she loved it. Three years later she called us back: she was ready for the real thing. So we tore it out and built her a true enclosed firebox with a mantel, re-laying the limestone so it stands proud of the wall. Good stone has a way of bringing people back.— Timothy Coker, Dynasty Stone Productions

Planning your own project? We’re building a video library to walk you through the process—from the first tool on the table to the final joint. Start with the written guide below, and call us when you need advice.
A field-ready overview for planning purposes. Follow applicable building codes, product instructions and job-specific requirements before installation.

Have mortar, a mixing tub and paddle, trowels, level, tape, masonry brush, grout bag and stone-cutting tools ready. Use eye, hand and breathing protection.

Start clean, stable and code-compliant. Install the required weather barrier and corrosion-resistant lath where needed, then apply and scratch the mortar coat. The actual codes behind this step — IRC R703.12, ASTM C1780 and the free MVMA guide — are listed in full right below the steps.

Blend stone from multiple boxes. Lay out a section on the ground, mix sizes and colors, and avoid long continuous joints or repeated shapes.

Work from corners inward. Butter the entire back of each rock evenly with mortar — never leave an air pocket behind a stone — then press and squeeze it firmly against the wall so mortar squeezes out at the edges. Keep your joint width, check level and clean smears before they harden.

Point every joint with mortar as the joints firm up — dry stack work included. Once the squeezed-out mortar has firmed up, scratch off the excess with a wooden scratcher — never metal, which scratches the stone — then sweep the joints clean and brush them to the desired depth. Keep stone faces clean, protect fresh work from weather, allow proper cure time and seal all caps.
Step 2 says “code-compliant” — here are the actual codes behind that, so you can read them yourself before you start.
The residential building code section written for exactly this work. Three parts matter most on a typical home project:
The code also points installers to TMS 602 Article 3.3C or the stone manufacturer’s own installation instructions.

Cities and counties adopt different editions of these codes and add their own local amendments. Before you start, confirm which edition applies and what your local building department requires — they are the final word on your project.
These are the habits that separate stonework that lasts from stonework that comes back. Follow them on every wall, every time.
Butter — “mud” — the entire back of every rock evenly with mortar, then press and squeeze it firmly against the wall until mortar squeezes out between the rock below it and the rock beside it. Full contact leaves water no place to go behind the stones, and that is what carries the work through freeze-thaw winters.
It is called dry stack, but the joints still get pointed with mortar. Mortar has to squeeze between each rock so no water can get in behind the stones.
All caps get sealed with a quality sealer. The owners’ recommendation: PROSOCO Sure Klean Weather Seal Siloxane PD in its natural finish — a breathable, water-based silane/siloxane penetrating sealer rated for manufactured stone surfaces. It protects without changing the stone’s look or color, will not trap moisture, and lasts up to about 10 years. Do not use the Color Enhancer WB version — the goal is to keep the stone’s original look.

Dynasty Stone Productions is owned by Timothy Coker and Dennis Coker. Together, we bring more than 25 years of hands-on experience to manufacturing veneer cast stone — and to helping homeowners, builders and contractors succeed with professional DIY guidance.
Dynasty Stone Productions proudly sponsors the Rejects, a local ball team. Our name rides on the back of every jersey — our logo, both owners’ names and phone numbers, and 25+ years of experience — the same way it stands behind every job we do: out front, where everybody can see it.

We build our stone to the national codes for manufactured stone veneer, inspect every batch ourselves, and hold our mix to published performance targets — so contractors, homeowners, and DIYers all get the same trusted stone, every time.
Every batch is inspected before packaging. Customers get the same color, texture, and quality in every batch — not just the first one.
